Scholarship Information and Details

Overview

Each year, as part of its annual celebration and focus on youth and education, the MLK Diversity-Engagement Foundation administers the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarships Program. These scholarships help to fund a portion of the college tuition for deserving Loudoun County graduating students, regardless of race or ethnicity. Each year, the MLK Diversity-Engagement Foundationawards a scholarship annually to a senior high school student.

A student considered for one of the year’s $ 1,000 MLK Community Service scholarships, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

Applicant Eligibility

Seniors eligible to graduate from high school by the end of the current academic school year and actively serve in our community.
Scholarship applicants must enroll in an accredited college or university for the following Fall academic year, to receive the scholarship.
Scholarship applicants must reside in Loudoun County.
Scholarship applicants must have and maintain a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) or above.
Scholarship applicants must send a complete application package to the Scholarship Review Committee on or before December 15, 2023.

Application Requirements

Scholarship applicants must submit a completed MLK Community Service Scholarship Application form (Please Type or Print) along with:

Two-page essay, typed, and double-spaced describing, “MLK Theme: How will I impact my community in the future?” that speaks to your desire to make our community a better place. File name includes the word “ESSAY-Your Name.”
A typed detailed description of your high school community service, and volunteer activities in our county. File name includes the words “COMMUNITY SERVICE.”
Two letters of recommendation from knowledgeable people in your life. File names includes the word “REC-Your Name.”
A copy of your most recent 12th-grade transcript which includes your cumulative high school grade point average. File name includes the word “TRANSCRIPT-Your Name.

The above-required documents may be submitted completely for the application to be considered for the MLK Community Service Scholarship. It is best if they are submitted together, however Recommendations can be sent separately based on school policy.

Application Submission

The above-required documents can be submitted completely in one of the following methods:

First Option-Via Online: submit via online at MLK Apply Online, and upload the required documents.
Second Option -Via E-mail: Scan the two-page application and other required documents, attach them in an email and send the email to the following email address: scholarship@mlkleesburg.org.
Third Option-Via Postal Service Mail: Mail the two-page application and required documents to: MLK Scholarship Committee | P.O. Box 1147, | Leesburg, VA 20177-1147

** Please Note: If candidates select the mail option, the completed application must be postmarked no later than Friday prior to December 15, 2023.

Application Tips

Scholarship applications are evaluated by a scholarship subcommittee of the MLK Diversity-Engagement Foundation. The scholarship evaluation committee considers the student applicant Application, Essay, Transcript Grades, Community Service history, and Recommendations submitted on behalf of the student.

Specific considerations include:

Application completeness and neatness
Essay’s address to topic theme, written content quality, and correct grammar
Consistent, demonstrated community service
Transcript displaying qualifying GPA
Recommendation strength and depth of association to candidate
